Lockout :(
Interesting that the owners want 10 years and the players offer started at 5, and then 6. I think the owners know the new TV deal in 5 years will be very lucrative and want to exclude them.
I was 11 for the last shortened season. How does FA work if they strike a deal in February?
Id use this to get the changes that should be in. Shorten the season to 76 games and make it so the top seeds can pick their opponent

I don't know what I'm going to do if there's no NBA next season, and that is apparently very much a possibility.
This is depressing... I mean, cmon, just look at http://www.nba.com/!

If they strike a deal in February, it means there was no season.
They'll start cancelling games the first week of September.
A deal needs to be in place by maybe December or the first week in January at latest to have any chance of salvaging a season.

Gotta admit, this is pretty depressing. Next season had so much hope, in that we might become a 30 win team. Now it looks like we'll have to wait another season. Hey, maybe we'll be a 40 win team by then!

It's going to take missing games for the players to cave in. They don't usually get big bucks around this time of the year anyway.

There isn't gonna be a 2011-2012 season. I may be wrong, but I doubt it

So if we lose the whole season do contracts still expire?

It's tricky, the owners would have to make a lump sum payment to all the players for their 11-12 salary if that were to happen. I'm sure the players union would push hard for that if and when this reaches the point that the entire season is in jeopardy.

Re: Lockout :(
After reading deadspin last week and what freedarko linked to I think this could be solved w/ increased Revenue sharing and the $300m(closer to $400m by October) in player give backs, and the potential euro division taking over some of the least profitable teams in 10 years.
Hell, even throw a sponsor on the jerseys. Just dont miss a season. Don't be lame owners
sure they'd rather break the players if they can help it, but wouldn't la, ny, chi etc rather split more between the fledging franchises than to lose a year of profits?

I don't think so. Maximizing profits for 5-10 years is more valuable.

Re: Lockout :(
Big picture is it really worth missing a season over? The NBA already fights an uphill battle pr wise. Missing an entire season would exacerbate that.
$400m in give-backs. Increased revenue sharing, and a 5 year deal should be enough. Then after 5 you can re-evaluate things w/ the new tv deal and the answer on the futures of some of the lesser teams becoming more clear.
If this is small market V big market then a lot if that gets solved w/ some relocation.
The new studies show that the NBA as a whole made around something like $150m.

Right... especially when a handful of players made that on their own between salary and endorsements. The players combined for about $2 billion in salary alone!!!

Re: Lockout :(
The fact that this site has lots of hardcore BBall fans and these forums are completely dead proves that the NBA cannot risk a missed season.
Player reps and owners need to get in a room, lock the lawyers outside, and get a FRAMEWORK of a deal started.
Obviously lawyers need to be involved in the details, but when they dictate the negotiating strategy just so they appear "powerful" to their clients, they ruin it for everyone.

Re: Lockout :(
well, when there's a lockout, there's really nothing to talk about. What are we supposed to do? As much as I'd like to see a NBA season (and I want to see one pretty badly), I have my doubts that it'll happen. None of the signs are good... but I'm hoping for the best.
